Exons: Bits of information for using the MUSC Shared Resource, the BioMolecular Computing Resource (BCR). Exon_27 Primer design at MUSC.The OLIGO program licensed by the BCR is a PowerPC MAC only program. The current release 6.8.3 will run in all PPC MACs and from all MACs running OSX. To use it you will have to : 1) Come to the fourth floor of the Library and sit at the G3 MAC near the BCR office (see map). or 2) From any other PowerPC MAC in the Library or in your Department, a) click on the APPLE icon, select "CHOOSER" b) Select "AppleShare" in the upper left window c) Select "Server IP Address..." in the right window. d) In the next pop-up window enter one of the following: IP number: 128.23.109.123 Domain Name: macbcr.library.musc.edu Short Name : macbcr.library e) Click on "Guest" and then "Connect" f) Finally select "Oligo 6.8 for G3" and click on "ok" g) Many users have experienced difficulties "quitting" OLIGO from remote access. To avoid this, begin each remote session by selecting the CHANGE menu option. Next select PREFERENCES. Proceed through the options to the last screen which controls STARTUP and QUIT options. Select "NO" to prevent the program from attempting an automatic save operation. Once NO has been selected, the program can be gracefully quit from remote access. h) Note to MAC OSX users. The "preferences" menu is under the "Oligo 6.8" menu at the left of the Application bar. PLEASE follow the instructions listed in step "g" for modifiying the preferences and select "NO" to prevent the program from attempting an automatic save operation. Once NO has been selected, the program can be gracefully quit from remote access. There are some hardcopy tutorials in the BCR office. Note that there are just two licenses so no more than two people at a time may use OLIGO6 in this fashion. In addition to the OLIGO program for MACs you might wish to check out the GCG PRIME program which is available via command line, x-server GUI and SEQWEB interfaces. In addition there is a link from the BCR Home page to the Whitehead Institutue's Primer program.
