Exons: Relevant bits of information for using the MUSC Shared Resource, the BioMolecular Computing Resource (BCR). Exon_18_Filling Out a UNIX account form to use the BCR The "vanilla" flavor UNIX account gives you access to PINE (e-mail) and to the UNIX gopher. The default optiion will ONLY allow you to use the computer called ATRIUM (atrium.musc.edu). In the event that you wish to use specific resources like the BCR you must indicate this on the UNIX account application form. By marking the Yes box for using additional resources plus either GCG or SYBYL or both, you will then have access to the application server known as ERG (erg.musc.edu). You will ALSO have access to PINE (e-mail) and to the UNIX gopher. I recommend that BCR users indicate that they wish to use: GCG (sequence analysis eg search GenBank), SYBYL (molecular modeling), Article Indexes ( MedLine Plus Current contents searching and management). The above arrangement ALSO gives the USER access to a UNIX Gopher Bookmark file with some pre-selected BCR usable bookmarks, a UNIX MOSAIC Hotlist with some pre-selected BCR usable sites, and you are preconfigured to run theUNIX Nework version of the NCBI program ENTREZ. NOTE: The SYBYL software, UNIX Mosaic, UNIX ENTREZ and the GCG GUI are accessible ONLY to personal computers with x-server software (I know of NO FREE x-server software- there may be some site licenses negotiated in next FY) installed (see Exon_1 for software recommendations). GCG may be run FROM THE COMMAND LINE and the Article Indexes may be run from any telnet software.
